So I'm reading Blue Moon, the eighth book in the Anita Blake series.

Seriously, Hamilton? Seriously? In this book Anita has to go out of state to bail her ex-boyfriend Richard out of a jail. She gets a call from Richard's brother who informs her that Richard has been arrested for rape. And her first response is, "Richard would never rape anyone!"

I'm only on chapter eighteen but so far not one person in Anita's entourage has even considered the possibility that this woman's claim might be valid. No, it's seriously been eighteen chapters of "Richard is such a BOY SCOUT and he could NEVER rape anyone and that trashy slut must obviously be LYING." And in one chapter we get an unpleasant description of the woman wherein... oh here, just read it yourself:

Betty was tall but the spike-heeled boots put her at six feet. The jeans were painted on, the blouse was midriff, and there was no bra. She had small enough breasts that she could get away without, but it was still noticeable and meant to be. She looked like a cowboy hooker. Richard had dated her. It made me think worse of him.

Obviously I know that Richard has been framed. Given how formulaic the Anita Blake books are, it's pretty much a foregone conclusion. However, this does not excuse 156 pages of reinforcing the myth that women are opportunistic whores who "cry rape" and that slut-shaming is a-okay. And given how many characters there are surrounding Anita at all times, it's really gross how not one of them ~goes out on a limb~ to suggest that maybe Richard is the one who's lying.

Also, I was wondering why this book had ballooned to about a hundred extra pages compared to the others, and I've come to the conclusion that it's because of all of the mundane clothing and decorating descriptions. Fuck man, trim some of that shit.

Anyway, don't mind me. I know it's just going to get worse. I have books nine and ten, which is when I think most fans jumped ship. Heard that there was a rape is love scene up in there, so that's something to look forward to.

ON A HAPPIER NOTE. I already have a nice spark of an idea for NaNoWriMo. Yes, I'm excited already. I reread my story from last year and, honestly, it's not as bad as I expected. Of course, it's still pretty cringe-worthy but there were parts I genuinely enjoyed. Specifically, the dialogue. I always hate my dialogue when I write it but end up liking it once I reread it a few months later.

If I choose to stick with the idea I have now then come November I'll be writing a fun, creepy story involving lesbians, cupcakes, and the supernatural. A winning combination if I've ever heard one. ♥
